About Us

While the Sundwall Family Medicine practice is new, the practice of family medicine is not new to the Sundwall family.

Doctor Peter V. Sundwall and his son Doctor Peter M. Sundwall are the fourth and fifth generations of family medicine doctors in their family. They come from a rich history of physicians who have cared for communities throughout Utah for over 100 years.

In 1932, great grandpa Peter Valentine Sundwall (known as Dr. Val) joined his uncle Olof Sundwall in Murray after practicing for a short time in Lehi. Together they began a family medicine practice serving generations of families in the Salt Lake area.

In 1979, Dr. Val’s son, Peter Sundwall, joined the family business after serving the community of Kanab, Utah for nearly 10 years. He continued to practice in Murray until his death in 2015. Dr. Val had another son follow in his footsteps, Dr. David Sundwall who has practiced family medicine in the Salt Lake area in addition to serving as United States Assistant Surgeon General and as Utah’s Commissioner of Health among other appointments. Together, these three generations of family physicians have provided over 80 years of care to Murray and the surrounding community.

In 1982 after practicing for 50 years Dr. Val told the newspaper, “Many of [my patients] have been with me since I first started in Murray and I feel I know not only them but their children, many of whom I delivered into this world. I value their friendship and support to a far greater extent than my words convey.” His sentiments echo the feelings of each generation of Sundwall doctors.

When the current Dr. Peter V. began practicing, he was one of two providers to debut Highland’s first health care center in 1997. He moved to Lehi two years later being among the first family physicians to practice in Lehi in over 10 years. It all seemed to come full circle for Peter V. who practiced on Lehi’s Main Street—the very street his grandfather set up shop 65 years previous.

Dr. Peter V. formerly practiced with Alpine Family Medicine, but felt pulled to continue the tradition of family medicine with his newly graduated son, Dr. Peter M. (yes another Peter Sundwall!).
Together, they devote themselves to continuing their rich family tradition of providing dedicated medical care to families in their home communities.
